Bulgarian sanctuary for ex-dancing bears

In June 2004 a 12-ha complex with 7 separated bear enclosures has been opened in Belitza in Bulgaria. The funds for the project (1.9 m EUR) were raised by Vier Pfoten (Four Paws) NGO from Austria and by Brigitte Bardot foundation (France). The Vier Pfoten coordinated the construction work. The purpose of the facility is to provide the life long homes for bears confiscated from Bulgarian streets where they performed dancing and begging shows. At the time of opening 13 bears were already in, and in the meantime the full capacity of 25 bears was reached by housing the already selected individual bears.
