New natural history research of Medvjeđa špilja (The Bear Cave) on the island of Lošinj (Croatia)
Since its discovery in 1926, Medvjeđa špilja cave was known as a palaeontological locality. Scuba-divers participated in the research made in 1974, which showed that most of the cave was submerged. Faunistical research in 1974 were made only in the brackish part of the underground lake, and the result were certain common amphipods and gastropods. Dr. Frano Kršinić initiated a systematic visit to anchihaline speleological objects in order to collect calanoid copepods along the sea coast and islands from Cavtat to Rovinj. Medvjeđa špilja cave was also included. The research started there in 2004 and thanks to speleodiving the cave showed to be much bigger. Total length of canals in Medvjeđa špilja cave so far is 230 m. That makes it the longest submerged sea cave in the Croatian part of the Adriatic coast and islands. New findings of fossil vertebrates were registered in the bottom part of the canal. Among recent fauna there is an especially interesting finding of the deep sea sponge from the genus Oopsacas which has so far been found in Adriatic only in the Živa voda cave on the island of Hvar. We collected many other so far unidentified sponges, serpulids and ascidians, and also specimens of copepod calanoids, of which the most important is the genus Spelaeohvarella.
