Application of low-silicon hot work tool steel for the die casting moulds operating under high thermal load

Wear mechanisms of the functional parts in the die casting mould, made in the company Končar-Alati d.d. for the company Lipovica d.d, producing an aluminium-alloy radiator were monitored. History of lifetimes of critical parts in several radiator bodies is presented. The lifetime data related to wearing out are accompanied by the steel type (chemical composition) and hardness values. For production of the radiator die casting moulds, steel grades W.Nr. 1.2343 and W.Nr. 1.2367 were used, where the main damage mechanism of the critical parts was heat checking. In order to improve the die casting mould lifetime, it was decided to use the vacuum remelted low-silicon hot work tool steel which was launched to the market with an aim to improve the heat checking resistance of the hot work die casting moulds. However, application of the low-silicon steel did not improve the die casting mould lifetime, but introduced some new issues and difficulties, for the subject product and for the related application. Performance of the low-silicon hot work tool steel was exceeded by some other ESR hot work tool steels containing higher amount of silicon.
