Malaria among seamen of the County Primorsko-goranska

Background In the world every year 300 million people get infected by malaria and 1 million out of them die. Malaria as autohtonic disease was for the last time noticed in Croatia in the 1954.. Evidence shows that since then yearly in Croatia are registrated 10-15 cases of malaria. More correctly from 1968. to 2004.in Croatia 326 persons have been registrated with malaria. These are imported cases, mostly among seamen from the Croatian costal counties. Objective The goal is to present epidemiological characteristics of the seamen infected by malaria in the period from 1968. to 2004. in the County primorsko – goranska and frequency of this disease in search. Materials and methods This is retrospective study. Source of informations are infection disease / death notification forms and questionnaires fill up by infected person in the Epidemiological department of the Educational Institute of Public Health County primorsko – goranska and as well informations from the archives of the Parasitological laboratory Educational Institute of Public Health County primorsko – goranska, where diagnosis for malaria are done primarly for region of our county. Results In the observed period there are 66 reported infected cases of malaria. 64 of them ere males and 2 females. In the 78, 8% of cases seamen are infected persons, all males, who are in 82, 7% cases between age of 20 to 49. In 46, 2% of cases it is a word about Plasmodium Falciparum as a cause of disease. All of this are mostly importerd cases. 32, 7% cases of infection are from the countries on the west coast of Africa. In our Institute of Public Health from the 1985.to 2004. year 849 slides of perifer blood are examined, and 20 of them have had positive diagnosis. Most often is Plasmodium Falciparum – 11, and right behind is Plasmodium Vivax- 9. Conclusion Malaria is kind of disease whose research is still current and it has big importance. Suitable vaccine, on which production supreme experts are working, would reduct frequency of this disease in the world, among persons who live in those epidemic regions, and mostly among travels and seamen, who are main subject of this presentation.
