Hepatitis C in Primorsko-goranska county with the special emphasize on representation among seamen

Introduction Hepatitis C is great public health problem all over the world. It considered that 3 % of world population is infected by hepatitis C virus and more than 170 million carriers have risk to develop liver cirrhosis or/and hepatocellular cancer. Objective The goal is demonstrate epidemiological characteristic of hepatitis C in the County primorsko – goranska with special accent on seamen’ s. Materials and methods This is retrospective study. Source of informations are infectious disease / death notification form and questionnaires of diseased person in Epidemiological department Educational Institute of Public Health County primorsko – goranska and Croatian institute of Public Health, and history of diseases from Clinic for Infectiouse Disease and Clinic for Internal Disease, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, Croatia. This is case control study in which diseased from hepatitis C are compare to diseased from hepatitis B, HIV diseased and control group with absence of any liver related disease. Results Groups of case-control study are compared by sex, age, place of born, occupation with special accent on seamen’ s, and by ways of disease transmission. Between 126 persons with hepatitis C infection we found 6 seamen, in the group with hepatitis B infection we found 3 seamen , in the group with HIV infection 26 seamen and in the control group 1 seamen. Ratio male / female among hepatitis C diseased is 2, 2 : 1 ; among hepatitis B diseased 1, 35: 1, among HIV diseased 5, 3 : 1 and among control group 1, 1 : 1. Average age of diseased in all groups is 37, 9 years. The way of diseased transmission is parenteral in 64, 3 % persons with chronic HC infection. The leading way of parenteral spreading is intravenouse drug addict– 37, 0 %, then blood transfusion – 30, 9 %, surgical or other medical treatment – 23, 5 % Conclusions Hepatitis C infection has not significant connection with seamen's profession. That is expected if we take into consideration the most common ways of disease transmission: parenteral transmission as intravenous drug addict, blood transfusion and surgical or other medical treatment. Seamen are significantly more frequently infected with HIV. Most probable way of HIV transmission is promiscuity behavior, sexual transmission throughout contact prostitutions over the whole world. Mostly HIV infected seamen are with lower educations, very often cooks and stewards.
