Injuries and Diseases On an Oil-Rig

Background: Oil-rig is special naval unit with drilling and production sectors. Many workers and high technology are concentrated in small working area. This population consists of small amount of specialised workers and lives in relative isolation at the sea. The workers are at special health risks due to their work condition. The aim of the study was to describe the interference between health risks factors and conditions of the work. Methods: Retrospective case-series study of the diseases and the injuries of crew members onboard an American oil-rig, situated in Mediterranean sea in the 1-year period. Results: In 284 workers 518 medical examinations were performed in total. At the first place in morbidity there were injuries and poisonings (26, 7%). Then follow musculo-sceletal disorders (17, 5%), respiratory diseases (14, 2%), gastrointestinal disorders (12, 1%), psychic system disorders (10, 3%), nervous system disorders (9, 2%), skin diseases (6, 5%), urogenital disorders (2, 9%) and circulatory system diseases (0, 6%). In the total number of injuries, the hand and hand fingers injuries (48, 3%) were most frequent, following leg without foot (13, 4%), eye (11, 3%), head and neck (10, 1%), forearm without hand (7, 9%), foot (6, 7%) and body (2, 3%). Because of the large number of injuries, this group of diseases (XVII.), required further analysis of all factors responsible for their appearance. Conclusion: Well-organized work safety and security, and high quality medical assistance have no alternative in the work organization, especially onboard oil-rig. Special attention should be paid to the worker's basic medical education, protective measures and first aid self-assistance and assistance between workers, on the occasion of work injury.
