The effect of the ball-milling of mixed hydroxide, Ni(OH)2+2Fe(OH)3, on the formation of nickel ferrite
Mixed hydroxide, Ni(OH) 2 + 2 Fe(OH)3 , was milled in a planetary mill using an agate bowl and balls (99.9 % SiO2). Ball-milled samples were heated at a maximum temperature of 300 or 500 oC. The RT Mössbauer spectra of ball-milled samples showed the superposition of two quadrupole doublets. After heating at 300 oC the superposition of two doublets at RT was preserved with a slight increase of quadrupole splitting for the sample ball-milled for 64 h. At liquid N2 temperature, the sample ball-milled for 2 h and heated at 300 oC showed a central quadrupole doublet and sextet with very broad lines. After heating at 500 oC, the RT Mössbauer spectra showed slight sharpening of the broad lines due to hyperfine magnetic splitting and disappearing of the central quadrupole doublet with an increase of the time of ball-milling. At liquid N2 temperature the superposition of two sextets was observed, indicating the presence of nickel ferrite as a single 57Fe-bearing phase. Ball-milling of the mixed hydroxide precursor suppressed the formation of hematite at 500 oC, as the phase associated to nickel ferrite. The calculations, based on XRD measurements, showed that nickel ferrite crystallites formed at 500 oC increased from 8 to 12 nm with an increase of the time of ball-milling, and this result is in accordance with the shapes of the Mössbauer spectra at RT and liquid N2 recorded for the corresponding samples.
