Influence of process parameters in laser welding on the hardness of the welded joint
Laser welding of steels with higher carbon content causes substantial increase of the hardness in the welded joint area. A report on the welding of heat-treatable steel 25 CrMo 4 and 42 CrMo 4, 2 mm thick sheet, with high power Nd:YAG laser is presented. Laser and process parameters were explored, applying model of central composite plan. Argon and Helium were used as shielding gases. Quality assessment was done according EN ISO 13919-1 standard. Visual inspection, radiographic examination and metalographic analysis were done to asses weld quality. Results of hardness testing have been processed applying statistical methods and mathematical modeling using method of responding surfaces was done. Effects of heat input, type and gas flow rate upon the hardness have not been registered, while the effect of focus position relative to the workpiece surface is significant.
