Stem cells

All cells of the hematolymphoid system develop from a common precursor known as the multipotent hematopoietic stem cell. At some point during development ceommitment to one particular lineage accurs with the loss of ability to give rise to other lineages. Recent studies of our group suggest the existence of a lymphoid stem cell in the adult mouse thymus. IOn order to understand the early events of T lymphocyte development and commitment we sort putative precursor from bone marrow, fetal liver and blood taking into account the characteristics of the stemm cells or commited lymphoid precursors. The in vitro systems include fetal organ cultures capable of supporting lymphopoiesis. In addition to a new insight into lymphocyte development, theimmediate relevance of in vitro cultures is in clinical procedures.
