The GIS project for Mt. Medvednica, Zagreb, Croatia
Establishing itself as an irreplaceable tool in many aspects of human activities, GIS has also found its place in biology. Thanks to geographically defined data, the making of species and community distribution maps is easy. Analyses of natural, or man made events in the past and prediction of those in the future are much more precise and detailed. All of this is important for the preservation of nature. To introduce GIS as a tool in biological research and the management of protected areas we gathered a multidisciplinary expert team from the Department of Botany at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb and the Croatian Natural History Museum with the aim of establishing GIS for Medvednica Nature Park. As a very important component of this and all future similar projects we laid great emphasize on standardization of procedures for collecting data in the field, especially for the mapping of flora and fauna. Field collected data with their precision and accuracy will serve to define the areas with the richest biodiversity, which is a crucial step in any protection plan.
