Gas phase ligation kinetics of metal monocations with pyrene

Gas phase ligation of various M+ ions with pyrene is reviewed. The M+ (M = Al, K, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Nb, Mo, Ru, Ag, Sn, Ta, W, Re, Pt, Au, Hg, Pb, Bi and U) were produced by a single laser pulse with the pyrene already present in the gas phase within a Fourier transform mass spectrometer (FTMS). The ligation proceeds as a certain number of consecutive additions with or without expulsion of some part (usually H2) of the ligand. Charge transfer, if the neutral metal has a higher ionization energy than the pyrene, as well as dimerization, oxidation by residual oxygen and protonation through ubiquitous water in the instrument, does also take place. The progression of the reactions was followed by varying the delay time before recording all the present ions in the spectrometer, i.e. either after the laser pulse or after an additional expulsion of immediately formed products which enabled to get rid of products formed by electronically excited M+.
