Proceedings of 9th International Symposium on Temperature and Thermal Measurements in Industry and Science / Volume 1

These 2-volume Proceedings contain the fully refereed subset of the papers presented at TEMPMEKO 2004, the 9th Symposium on Temperature and Thermal Measurements in Industry and Science, held on June 22-25 2004 in Dubrovnik-Cavtat, Croatia. The organizer of the 9th TEMPMEKO Symposium was Laboratory for Process Measurement (LPM) at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia. The Symposium programme included all aspects of temperature, humidity and thermal measurements, with final scientific programme consisting of 231 contributions distributed as follows: - 6 Plenary lectures with topics including: History of the thermometric scales ; New ways to define the Kelvin ; Humidity generation ; Temperature amplification ; Conductivity of molten materials and Realization of detector-based Kelvin. - 3 Round table plenary lectures featuring visions for the future of cryogenic, contact and radiation thermometry. - 110 oral and 112 poster presentations with topics including: radiation thermometry, temperature scales and fixed points, thermodynamic temperature determinations, interlaboratory comparisons, calibration procedures and facilities, uncertainty estimation, applications, resistance thermometry, thermocouple thermometry, humidity and thermal properties. The TEMPMEKO 2004 had 242 attendees with their geographical distribution truly reflecting the global scientific activity in temperature, humidity and thermal measurements: 122 from Western Europe, 54 fromCentral and Eastern Europe, 34 from Asia and Australia, 28 from Americas, and 4 from Africa. The large attendance to TEMPMEKO 2004 created the opportunity for 3 satellite workshops ("Uncertainty in Humidity Measurements", "Common problems in Radiometry and Thermometry" and "Uncertainty of Temperature Fixed Points") to be organized, as well as for 11 collateral meetings to take place between Symposium events. In the exhibition area 11 companies presented the latest instrumentation for temperature and humidity measurements. Main Symposium social events were: Welcome party, Cultural visit by boats to the city of Dubrovnik and Conference dinner. In the period preceding the Symposium the received abstracts were submitted to the international review by the pool of referees consisting mainly of the members of International Programme Committee (IPC) and other well-known experts. Those accepted were included in the Symposium programme and provided to the Symposium participants on CD ROM as unrefereed manuscripts, at the time of the conference. Following the Symposium, the full papers were submitted to review. A large pool of referees examined the papers in relation to their expertise resulting in: comments and recommendations that were returned to the authors, minor or major revisions, 13 rejected or withdrawn papers, and in some cases, in additional reviews by adjudicators. The editorial work was finished in June 2005 and the Proceedings went into print one year after the Symposium. Sat cito si sat bene! The 2 Volumes of the Proceedings containing 215 contributing papers, present the state-of-the-art in temperature, humidity and thermal measurements, as well as the ever-useful reference and overview in the field. They reflect the great efforts and marvelous work of many contributing scientists, researchers and engineers. I am truly honored and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of it. My gratitude is due to contributing authors, participants, plenary lecturers, session chairmen, workshop organizers, members of IMEKO TC-12, IPC members, NOC members, and those who refereed and edited full paper manuscripts. For all their work and assistance I thank my LPM colleagues: Mrs.Lovorka Grgec Bermanec, Tomislav Stasic and Tomislav Veliki. Special thanks to TC-12 Chairman Dr.Francesco Righini. I also thank the Ministry of Science, Education ans Sports of Republic of Croatia for financial support of the Symposium. In the end, I wish our colleagues of National Research Council of Canada a lot of success in organizing TEMPMEKO 2007 in Lake Louise. Davor Zvizdic Editor-in-Chief
