Power Converters for Traction Application

Power converters for traction application have some specificities that has strong impact on their design. Apart from standard requirements, there are some emerging ones. The evolution of power converters for traction application is mainly dictated by the required weight, volume and cost reduction. Power module, which is a mechanical assembly of different functional parts, is the key element for traction application. The main aspects in designing power modules are highlighted, and some limitations explained. Future trends in design of power converters for traction application are specified. Several practical solutions of power converters for typical traction applications: main power supply converters, auxiliary power converters and traction converters, are presented.
