CMC(l:c) and CIEDE2000 Color Difference Formulae Performance for Black Hue Selectivity

Technological development over the past few decades, increased requests on quality and reproducibility as well as significant growth of dyestuff production, moved textile industry toward quick response, just in time production and shorter processes. This necessitates systematic instrumental evaluation and classification of colours, facilitating not only communication about colour, but also the analysis and definition of the aesthetic relations among colours. Textile production involves repeat production that should ideally be of exactly the same colour as the original one, predicting the minimum of metamerism. Also, one of the major problem in practical dyeing in a dark shades such as deep achromatic blacks is that, while observed, black often create a sense of chromatic hue (for example blue, green or red). This could cause some hue discrepancies and disagreements considering a requested standard. Additionally, industrial practice is facing the problem of reactive dyestuff selection due to a great amount of dyestuff producers present on a today market. Considering this, the setting of pass/fail colour tolerances considering the chosen dyestuff as well as required quality and reproducibility, is unavoidable in industrial processes. Colour tolerances are set on basis of instrumental colour measurement and total colour difference value (dE) calculations. Currently there are a number of advanced colour difference formula in use, from which the CMC(l:c) mathematical system is the current ISO standards for the textile and paint.
