Relatedness of red wine grape cultivars Plavac mali and Zinfandel(Vitis vinifera L.)
The importance of Zinfandel in the US wine industry is evident, as it has been named "America's most important red wine grape". In 1999, Zinfandel represented more than 23% of total acreage and total red wine produced from over 40 red wine varieties grown in the United States. Our results at 25 polymorphic microsatellite loci confirm that Plavac mali, the most important red wine cultivar of Croatia, is a progeny of the cross between another Croatian cultivar, Dobričić, and Zinfandel. This finding provides strong support for a Dalmatian origin of Zinfandel, despite the presence of the same cultivar in Italy under the name Primitivo. The performed likelihood analysis supports the genetic findings to a very high degree of probability.
