A Numerical Model of Cooling in Gas-Quenching Systems

Modern technology of heat treatment uses high pressure gas-quenching systems in vacuum furnaces to obtain required properties of treated materials. The flow of thermal energy between the surface of the material and the quenching medium is modeled by the Newton's law of cooling. We present a mathematical model for determination of heat transfer coefficient $\alpha$ in this law. The model is based on temperatures measured during the quenching period and uses solution extension techniques for the heat conduction problem. We also discuss some practical and numerical problems which have to be properly solved in order to accurately and efficiently implement this procedure.
