How we built simple and inexpensive, but fully functional vibroacoustic fetal stimulator "Ira"
Objective The aim of the work was to build simple, inexpensive and fully functional vibroacoustic fetal (VAF) stimulator. Methods of the work We reviewed principles of VAF stimulation as well as biophysical principles of human tissue acoustics. We used standard electronic components to build the device. We tested the device by sound analyzer prior to the first application. Clinical effects were being evaluated during one-year of clinical usage, by standard cardiotocograph recorder. Results We concluded that device for VAF stimulation should meet following criteria: low frequency (100 - 150 Hz) and high sound pressure (100 dB). Our device mach those criteria. Absence of controls for frequency and level adjustments enabled operation always in the optimum range. It was simple for operator and convenient for pregnant women. The first application was to baby Ira in 28th week of gestation (daughter of the constructor D. Stojanović). In our clinical tests normal but dormant fetuses responded 100 %. The device has been awarded with gold medal at INPEX XV, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, May 19-23. 1999 - the America's largest invention show. Conclusions The device named "IRA" shows excellent fetal response and high reliability. It is simple and inexpensive, but fully functional. It can be used especially in low budget medical system, as well as in every antenatal care system. Recently has been improved to resist immersion into fluids (disinfectants).
