Chlamydophila psittaci in Turkey in Croatia

Chlamydophila psittaci (C. psittaci) is an important etiological agent in turkey respiratory diseases known to be transmissible to humans causing significant infection. Outbreaks of respiratory diseases in turkeys in Croatia have been recorded, but the role of C. psittaci in it was not investigated. As intracellular and zoonotic agent it represents difficult and hazardous material for handling. This was the main reason to perform the preliminary epidemiological investigation by antibody detection. From 2003 until 2005 altogether 156 blood sera of turkeys of different ages were collected and tested for the presence of antibodies against C. psittaci using ELISA commercial kit (RIDASCREEN® ; Chlamydia psittaci, R-Biopharm AG, Darmstadt, Germany). Out of them 41 sera from turkey rearing parents flocks, between 10 and 29 weeks of age and 26 (63.4 %) were found positive. From 2 layer flocks, aged between 37 and 53 weeks, 71 sera were collected and 14 sera (19.7%) were found positive. In 5 turkeys broiler flocks, aged between 6 and 28 weeks, 44 sera were collected and 6 birds were positive (13.6%). Because of finding of specific antibodies against C. psittaci in most of the examined flocks (altogether 29.48 % positive), further investigations are needed in attempt to detect antigen positive birds and to estimate the role of C. psittaci in clinical respiratory syndrome.
