X-ray Detectability of Single Phases of Microinclusion
In the course of production and exploitation of tubes or other products the appearance of cracks is sometimes noticed. For their examination metallography, X-ray diffraction method and electron probe microanalyses were used. The place and technique of taking macroinclusions for analysis depended on their shape and size. Usually, large samples were separated under a magnifying glass or measured directly by the slow step-scan speed technique. The place and technique of taking tiny macroinclusions were determined on the micrographs and/or radiographs. Where tiny macroinclusions were in high concentration the samples were cut, polished, deep etched and evaporated with copper. The prepared samples were measured using a diffractometric system, a scanning electron probe microanalyser and a Reichert MF2 microscope. Result showed the slow step-scan speed technique to have been successful in recording phases of macroinclusions. With this technique Fe3O4, alpha-Fe2O3, CaCO3, SiO2, FeCO3, MgO, Al2O3, CaSiO3 phases were determined in minimal detectability amounts.
