Blends of Thermoplastic Polyurethane and Polypropylene
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was blended with thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) in different weight percentages in a twin-screw extruder and characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and X-ray analysis. Mechanical properties were also measured. Viscoelastic and mechanical properties of pure thermoplastic polyurethane, polypropylene and TPU/PP blends were studied. The viscoelastic functions storage modulus (E ), loss modulus (E ), and tg were determined by Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA) in the temperature range of – 100 C to 250 C. Mechanical properties, tensile strength and break we determined on the universal taster for mechanical investigation at the room temperature. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) investigation indicated that the PP was partially miscible with the TPU.This partial miscibility is due to the lack of interfacial interaction and adhesion between the nonpolar crystalline PP and polar TPU phases. The mechanical results showed higher tensile strength and less elongation at break with the addition of PP in TPU.
