Concrete pavements on bridges

In the last couple of years a number of reinforced-concrete bridges in Croatia underwent a pavement renewal by application of a special kind of high performance concrete. If compared to the “ classical” solutions of pavement renewal by application of asphalt layers and waterproofing, this new method significantly accelerated the renewal of the bridge ; waterproofing was replaced by water-resistant pavement of small permeability on chloride ions ; the bridge can be reinforced within its set parameters ; the execution of cantilever bridge extensions on old bridges is simple, and the pavement permanence is increased. In comparison to similar solutions applied in other countries, where the pavements are being done by use of special concrete of high strength, hereby presented solutions include design of concrete of specific strength, 35 MPa and 40 MPa, having high performance in terms of resistance to wear, non-slipness, water non-permeability, and de-icing salt, with less risk of crack emergence and greater resistance to chloride ions penetration. Further improvement of durability and mechanical resistance was attained by impregnation by styrene-butadiene latex solution. This was preceded by the detailed laboratory testing of the impact the multi-layered protection has in terms of water-absorption, gas-permeability, chloride ion diffusion and resistance to wear. This paper describes the three typical projects of pavement renewal, road slab and pavement renewal and bridge extension.
