Historical roots of unconventional medicine in Europe

The rise of modern phenomena of so called " alternative; traditional, unconventional; complementary; supplementary; paramedical; para-scientific medicine " as an primarily unscientific, unprofessional, unofficial health care practice, has been recognised in majority of European countries at the late sixties and early seventies. Unconventional medicine in European contemporary reality cannot be ignored. It is an omnipotent, provocative challenge for orthodox and unorthodox health care providers and medical consumers. To understand its potentials in the future health care strategy, we may not oversight the specific inner force of human cultural genome in the constellation of present socio-cultural, political and economical environment. To understand this segment which is related to the phenomena of modern "unconventional medicine " we have to follow and analyse the evolution of medical knowledge, as well as the development of medical care and practice from the very beginning up to the modern time. Outgrowth of medicine in Europe is connected with development of various medical knowledge, medical procedures and health care systems, based upon different conception of the nature of humans life & death, causes of health, disability, illness & disease. It is usually explained that this global epistemological process has initiated and determined the differentiation and the structure of health care providers and the rise of medical professions in general. Evolution presupposes the idea of development from the lower to the higher level, which is understood as a progress. Survival or revival of health care practice based upon the lower level of intellectual human knowledge appears to be the evidence of the evolution gap or the indication of regression. Consequently, what does it mean in the case of unconventional medicine in contemporary Europe? Why is it happening ? Obviously there are many possible explanations. One is based upon the results of historical analysis which reveals that the concept of " unconventional medicine" was established already in the prescientific time, at the moment when health care became recognised as an socially relevant, important and powerful, but potentially harmful human activity. If we accept this fact, then in searching for the historical roots of unconventional medicine in general we have to explore and investigate why, when, where, and by whom certain health care practise, based upon particular medical knowledge and conceptions became declared and identified as " harmful ". From the patients point of view, such research disclose that behind purely medical arguments, many complex non-medical goals dominated in this process, which is on local, national or European level specific for particular natural, historical, social & cultural environment.
