Potentials of Mobile Communication Technology in Digital Exchange of Information Exemplified by the System of Exam Registration by SMS
Abstract: Modern digital technology has opened up a wide range of possibilities for transferring information, resulting in a generally increased mobility of the society. These developments have created the mobile office concept, thus increasing the flexibility of individuals regarding space and time constraints. Technological expansion of telephone services, especially mobile or cellular phones is a source of information mobility of the society. It is therefore not surprising that mobile phone systems are home to other information subsystems that ensure man's independence of time and space. One of these information subsystems is the theoretically modeled and experimentally applied subsystem of exam registration by mobile phone without any manual labor. The system has been tried out at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek. According to this concept, students can use mobile phones and SMS service to register for exams in a written form - which means that the registration is recorded. By doing this, they actually exchange data with the program system of students' registry. Web technology and data exchange system based on a modern communication concept are key elements of pragmatic realization of SMS exam registration concept. The potentials offered by the global information-telecommunication infrastructure are the basis for success of global mobility concept, which contributes greatly to the expansion of digital society and turning the world into the global village. The developed model of exam registration by SMS is a striking example of integration possibilities between digital technology and its pragmatic global applicability in all the areas of dynamic and dislocated human activities.
