Lifelong education for the new age

The scientific-technological revolution has brought about great changes in the contemporary world among which social-cultural changes have effected our everyday lives. The crucial pedagogical consequence of the scientific-technological revolution has been the expansion and rapid outdated ness of knowledge. In these new conditions, traditional education no longer suffices. The reason for this is that it tends to remain within the confines of its own quantitative expansion (the linear expansion of education) ending up in a kind of encyclopedianism or its opposite - an expansion that has, true to say, brought about a boom but also a crisis of education. The crisis of traditional education has led to the development of a new conception of education, which is intendment to meet the needs of man in contemporary society. The conception of lifelong education encompasses all men, throughout their whole lives and in all situation of life. Lifelong education does not mean a greater amount of education that was given within the traditional mode. What lifelong education represent is a different kind of education: instead of passive institutional education according to the traditional model of teaching-reproducing, the basic postulates of lifelong education seek to arouse the activity of the individual within the socialized model education and to teach him how to learn. Through the process of self-actualisation implied in lifelong education, modern man creates the conditions for a better future. On the beginning of the third millennium, lifelong education has become a necessity of contemporary developments.
