The adipose tissue of young cats after cold stress: apparent morphological transformation from white to brown adipose tissue
Adipose tissue can be present in mammals in two types, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). WAT is the common type, present in all mammals during the whole life. BAT is well developed in small rodents and hibernators. Other, larger, mammals have VAT only during theier perinatal period. It is konwn that cold can retard this replacement, and in certain diseases BAT appears even in old age. After the cold stress lipid droplets within the adipose cells diminished or almost disappeared.
