Effect of combined treatment with dihydroergotoxine and ethanol on brain biogenic amines in the rat
This study was undertaken to find out whether the use of ethanol will alter the beneficial effect of dihydroergotoxine on the central nervous system and whether dihydroergotoxine might improve the alterations in brain neurotransmitter chemistry induced by subacute administration of dihydroergotoxine. Although the treatment with dihydroergotoxine appears to be able to block the effect of ethanol on dopaminergic transmission, our previous results showing that dihydroergotoxine lowers the seizure threshold and potentiates the alterations of noradrenergic activity in the rats withdrawn from ethanol, would not suggest the treatment of ethanol induced alterations of neurotransmission with dihydroergotoxine. On the other hand, the use of ethanol does not appear to substantially affect the effect of dihydroergotoxine on the activity of the neurotransmitter systems studied.
