The epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease in Northern costal county
In the nineties of twentieth century a series of epidemiological studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) were published throughtout Europe. Their results showed the loss of geographical North_South gradient. In Croatia two epidemiological studies of IBD have been published by now, but neither of them has analysed the epidemiology of Crohn's disease (CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC) in the Northern coast area-in county named Primorsko.goranska. The aim of this research was to establish the incidece and prevalence of IBD among the population of Primorsko-goranska county in the priod of seven years(1995-2001.)The results have shown growth of incidence of IBD wich has in prospective part of the study reach the average values of the European multicentric study. Among the diseases mostly not very severly forms of disease are present(phenotype A1L1B1 and proctoigmoiditis respectively). The number of disease complications was as espected an described in literature. Smoking was not confirmed asrisk factor for CD whereas the increased rate of appendectomy suggests that in some cases it was a result of undiagnosed disease.Current smoking, appendectomy and tonsilectomy present a protective factor for the development of UC. Measles, measles vaccination and oral contraceptives were not confirmed as a risk factor neither in Cd, nor in UC.
