High frequency of coeliac disease in Istrian region-Croatia
Coeliac disease is a life-long disorder precipitated by the ingestio of gluten in genetically susceptible persons characterised by small intestinal mucosal damage.Exclusion of dietary gluten, results in healing of mucosa, resolution of the malapsorptive state and reversal of most complications(malignant and nonmalignant)associated coeliac disease.Recent studies suggest that coeliac disease is one of the most common malapsorptive disorders. The aim of our study was to investigate the cumulative incidence of coeliac disease in childhood during 15 years period and to analyse clinical presentation of the disease.Coeliac disease in Croatia is more frequent than previously expected. The cumulative incidence rate of 1, 163 per 1000 live births belongs to higher incidence rates in Europe. The patients present with typical symptoms during the first years of life.
