Kinetics of micronucleated bone marrow and peripheral blood cells during the subchronic microwave exposure

The aim of study was to investigate kinetics of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs) in the bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of rats during the course of intermittent subchronic exposure to selected radiofrequency microwave (RF/MW) radiation. Rats were exposed 2h/day, 7d/week to RF/MW 2.45GHz, power density 5-10 mW/cm2. Specific absorption rate (SAR) was 1.25 +/- 0.36 W/kg. Control groups were included in the study. Each exposed group and matched controls were killed on the particular day of irradiation. BM and PB smears were supravitally stained and MN frequency, both, in the PB and BM was recorded by observation of 1000 PCEs/slides. Results were statistically evaluated using Statistics for Win. StatSoft 95. In comparison with controls, the MN frequency in the BM was significantly increased on experimental day 15th (p<0.05). BM MN frequencies were elevated in each intermittent experimental phase. The incidence of MNPCEs in the PB was significantly increased (p<0.05) after 8x2h treatments. Thereafter the MNPCEs declined to the control values until the end of the experiment. Such findings could be indicators of radiation effects on BM erythropoiesis and their reflection in the PB. Kinetics of MNPCEs in the BM and PB of irradiated rats revealed complex net of events including temporary imbalance in erythrocyte maturation and/or proliferation processes which activates feedback mechanism of homeostatic control system, possible elimination of MNPCEs from PB by the mononuclear phagocyte system, indicating an activation adaptation mechanism of rats on selected experimental conditions in subchronic RF/MW exposure phase.
