Basal cortisol, dexamethasone suppression test and platelet 5-HT in recurrent (unipolar) major depression, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder
Determined platelet serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]), basal cortisol (BCT), and dexamethasone suppression test (DST) for 62 male Ss (aged 18–55 yrs) with schizophrenia, 60 male Ss (aged 28–64 yrs) with recurrent (unipolar) major depression, and 19 male Ss (aged 23–58 yrs) with schizoaffective disorder. The major depressive group was subdivided into psychotic (N = 28) and nonpsychotic (N = 32) Ss. One-way ANOVA revealed no significant difference in concentrations of 5-HT, BCT, and post-DST cortisol among the 3 groups. A significant difference was found between psychotic and nonpsychotic recurrent major depressives in 5-HT and post-DST cortisol. Abnormal DST was somewhat more frequent in schizophrenic (61.3%) than in schizoaffective Ss (57.9%) and Ss with recurrent major depression (51.7%), but these differences were not significant.
