Efficient and convenient one-pot synthesis of nitriles from carboxylic acids

Introduction of a cyano group into a molecule, or transformation of an acid into the corresponding nitrile, is not always a simple procedure. In this connection, a procedure that can be used to convert carboxylic acids into nitriles at very high temperatures or via N-acylurea intermediates by using arylboronic acid and rhenium(VII) oxo complexes as active catalysts has been published. Herein, we present a new, efficient and convenient one-pot procedure for conversion of carboxylic acids into nitriles by their treatment with acetonitrile in presence of conc. sulfuric acid. The general preparative value of this reaction will be presented and the mechanism of the reaction will be discussed.
