Liquid -Crystalline Dimeric Imines-Synthesis And Mesogenic Properties
Here we report on synthesis and comparison of four series of dimeric molecules based on alkoxybenzoyl-oxyphenyl groups (1, 2) and salicylaldimine moiety (3, 4) connected to the spacer unit by imine functions. These molecules show strong effect of the alkylene spacer parity and terminal chain length on the liquid-crystalline properties. Additionally, two series of dimeric molecules (3, 4) based on salicylaldimine moiety possess hydroxy group which hydrogen bonds to the imine nitrogen to give six-membered ring structure and therefore rigidifies the molecule and has an impact on mesogenic properties. According to the textures all the compounds display mesogenic properties. Generally, compounds with even number of carbon atoms in the spacer behave like rods while compounds with odd number show the properties characteristic for bent shape molecules.
