The Role of Self-Evaluation and Self-Regulation Mechanisms in Self-Esteem Maintenance

In contemporary research on "self" there are a lot of phenomena related to maintaining (augmenting or repairing) self-esteem. In his review, Tesser (2000) didn't diferentiate between two crucial mechanisms of self-esteem maintenance: self-evaluation and self-regulation. Therefore, the aim of our research was to exam the relative impact of self-evaluation (past and future temporal comparisons) and self-regulation (primary, secondary, and tertiary personal control of development) on low and high self-esteem. The results of our short-term longitudinal study show that in both measurements the best predictors of lower self-esteem were tertiary control and emotional consequences of past temporal comparison in the social sucessfulness domain. No strategy of self-evaluation or personal control was a significant predictor of high self-esteem. Results analysis of subjects whose self-esteem decreased between two measurements, demonstrate that the only primary control of personal development was a significant predictor of self-esteem, while in a group of subjects whose self-esteem increased past temporal comparison in social sucessfulness domain and primary control had significant predictive value. The interpretation of these results is in concordance with theories of temporal comparisons and personal control of development.
