Effects of excessive Po River discharges in the northern Adriatic
The mechanism of fresh water spreading into the northern Adriatic was investigated in autumnal conditions of increased freshwater input during 1993 and 2000. While in 1993 the freshened waters flooded the entire northern Adriatic, in 2000 they remained confined to the western part of the basin. Hydrographic data collected at the Po River delta-Rovinj transect and meteorological data showed that the Po River waters were likely to reach the eastern coast under conditions of prolonged SE or SW winds, coupled with cross-basin uniformly high vertical stability of the water column and weak along-shore geostrophic transports in the vicinity of the Po River delta. In contrast, the waters were confined to the western part of the basin in conditions of prevailing E or NE winds, coupled with cross-basin asymmetric stability (higher near the Po River) and strong along-shore geostrophic transports in the vicinity of the Po River delta.
