Nitrogen laser beam interaction with Al-Si alloy
The beam of a nitrogen laser (6 ns, 0.6 J/cm2, 90 MW/cm2, 337 nm) was focused onto two targets, Al-Si alloy and pure Al, placed in air at normal pressure. The laser beam energy density on the targets was not uniform over the cross-section of the focal spot. Here we have concentrated on those parts of the surfaces that were irradiated most intensively by the laser beam. Damages on the surfaces after 10 and 100 laser pulses with the repetition in frequency of 1 Hz were observed by a metal microscope. The damages onto the Al-Si surface were much more intensive in comparison to pure aluminium sample. The deep of damage after 100 pulses was about 120 microns for the alloy and 1.2 microns for the pure Al-surface. This behaviour we can explained by means of fact that 13 % Si in Al-Si alloy reduces considerably the melting point of the alloy sample.
