Connection Between Occlusal Patterns in Maximal Intercuspidation Position and Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD)

Objective of this study was to asses role of occlusal contacts, regarding their epidemiological significance in TMD affected population using powerful computer processing procedures. Study involved 252 senior year students, studying at the School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb from year 2000 to year 2003. They have been thoroughly inspected for signs and symptoms of TMD. Approximately 300 variables were recorded for each student. Using acquired data students were divided into two groups: group which had at least one of the signs and symptoms important for diagnosis of TMD and control group without detectable signs and symptoms of TMD. Absence or presence of occlusal contacts in maximal intercuspidation position (MI) were recorded with 8 micrometers thick dental shim stock foil for every tooth in lower and upper jaw. Special mathematical algorithms, based on chi-square test and recursion, were developed to analyse the data. Using those algorithms, somewhat less than 65536 (216), different occlusal patterns were analysed. Statistical differences between number of students with specific occlusal patterns were automatically recorded and analysed. P-value used to determine statistical significance was set at 0.01 so more reliable data could be presented. Significant difference between occlusal patterns in MI position was determined in group of students that had at least one TMD sign or symptom and students without those signs and symptoms.
