Concrete design for crack-resistant secondary tunnel lining
Cracks frequently affect secondary lining in various tunnels. The study of varieties and types of cracks encountered in tunnels enables determination of causes that trigger this phenomenon. The following concrete properties, significant for minimization of cracking hazard, were subjected to theoretical and experimental analyses: temperature change, tensile and compressive strength, shrinkage, creep, modulus of elasticity, etc. These properties were tested on concrete of various mix design and, at that, concrete samples were submitted to different temperature regimens in order to simulate summer and winter conditions of use. An optimum mix design of concrete, presenting a minimum cracking hazard was also studied using a special device for complex testing of concrete under conditions similar to those that will prevail during tunnel construction and use.
