Association of ACE I/D polymorphism with hypertension in Croatia and its isolate
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) takes part in the renin-angiotensin system that is one of the main regulatory systems in blood pressure homeostasis. Its influence on hypertension is widely explored in various populations, but the results are still conflicting. The insertion/deletion polymorphism (ACE I/D) in intron 16 of the ACE gene is easily detectable and seems to be a good marker for ACE influence on various phenotypes. We studied ACE I/D polymorphism and hypertension in Croatian general population where we found the association of deletion homozygote genotype with hypertension. This influence seems to be specially pronounced in men younger then 40 years. These results are compared with the results of the ACE I/D association with hypertension in one of Croatian isolates – the island of Vis which is characterized by high prevalence of hypertension as well as high levels of inbreeding.
