Voda u magijskim obredima narodne medicine
This paper deals with certain aspects concerning the usage of water in magical rituals intended to prevent a disease, find its cause, or heal the patient - that are less known to scientists' audience. The work is based upon the evidence on the use of water in folk medicine, described mostly in the ethnological (anthropological) journal Zbornici za narodni život i običaje južnih Slavena. The mentioned material belongs mostly to the end of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. The data have been completed with evidence gathered through recent field researches into folk medicine in Croatia. Special attention of this paper is focused on the role of water in magical rituals connected with life and annual customs, the chasing away of evil spirits by the means of hot charcoals cast in water, the chasing away of strava (a kind of stupor) by casting melted lead in water, the usage of magical scripts put in water, and the collecting of daira (a special kind of ritual that invokes spirits in the Muslim world), all in the frames of folk medicine.
