Cyclic voltammetry of copper(ii) complexes with N, N-dimethylated L-amino acids

The study of the stability of copper(II) complexes with N-alkyl and N, N-dialkyl amino acid such as alanine, which does not have bulky amino acid side chains that could form aliphatic-aliphatic van der Waals interactions, showed that the lengthening of the N-alkyl chain (from methyl to propyl) lowered the copper(II) ability to bind the ligand. The stability constants lowered with the size of the substitutients through the methyl to the ethyl derivative after which they did not substantially change with the length of the aliphatic chain [1]. The explanation for the phenomenon was found in stereochemical reasons as provided by the theoretical conformational analysis made for the copper(II) complexes with N, N-dialkylated L-alanines [2]. This poster presents the results of electrochemical measurements of bis-copper(II) complexes with N, N-dimethylated L-valine, L-isoleucine and L-leucine to study the influence of different amino acid residues on the electrochemical behaviour of the complexes. By using cyclic voltammetry the oxidation-reduction potentials were determined. The measurements were done in non-complexing electrolyte (NaClO4) under physiological conditions (I=0.15 mol/L). [1] G.
