Xenia effects on iron nd zinc status in maize kernels
Xenia as the effect of foreign pollen on development and traits of fruits was demonstrated in maize. No data are published about changes in mineral concentrations in kernels due to pollen origin. The objective of the study was to examine the variation of the xenia effect on Fe and Zn concentrations in kernels of five divergent maize inbred lines comparing self pollinated and open pollinated plants. The inbred lines were grown at Zelčin (Eastern Croatia) in 2003. Concentrations of Fe and Zn in kernels were determined by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technique. In the analysis of variance effects of inbred line and type of pollination were significant for both concentrations. Results of our study clearly demonstrate an effect of the origin of pollen on the mineral concentrations in kernels. However, changes in Fe and Zn concentrations in kernels did not follow the same pattern. Foreign pollen significantly increased Fe concentrations, and mostly not significantly decreased Zn concentrations. It suggests that for these changes the most important factor could be source-sink relationship.
