Advantages of HBM Over IHBM for Single-Harmonic-Analysis of Forced Vibrations of an Impact-pair
Mechanical systems with clearances (impact-pairs) are non-linear vibration systems and corresponding frequency response characteristics can be determined only approximately. So, it is very important to investigate the accuracy and reliability of the applied approximate methods, as well as their computational efficiency. In this paper, the characteristics of the method of harmonic balance (HBM) and the incremental harmonic balance method (IHBM), when they are used for determining the single-harmonic steady state response of an impact-pair, are considered. One can infer that inside the frequency regions in which the method of harmonic balance gives satisfactory accurate and reliable results, i.e. where single-harmonic description of the response is adequate (frequency regions of double-sided impact cases), HBM is more efficient and more suitable than IHBM.
