Utilisation of heart rate variability in a routine practice
Heart rate variability (HRV) is still not widely used in practice, greately because of differences in standard values up-today refereed. The aim of this paper was to show differences between patients groups and to give reference values that will enable utilisation of HRV in a routine practice. Time- and frequency-domain HRV was analysed in 3415 patients from 24-hour Holter ECG. Cut-points of moderately depressed and pathological values were determined according to biostatistical principles. HRV differed by age, sex, type of patients and their disease (MANOVA ; p<0.001). According to that, cut-points of moderately pathological standard deviation of RR intervals ranged from 80-113 ms in younger female out-patients to 45-74 ms in subacute male patients. Differences in the type and stage of the disease have to be taken into account when determine cut-points of pathological HRV.
