Flow Formulation Finite Element Metal Forming Analysis with Friction via Penalty Function
The flow formulation finite element analysis of stationary metal forming processes is generalized to include strain-history-sensitive materials and boundary friction. Strain history at a point is obtained by determination of the respective point trajectory, which corresponds to the time history of the point. The equivalent strain rate is integrated along this trajectory. Boundary friction is introduced by superposing additional frictional velocity-sensitive load on flow elements and by introducing the Coulomb friction law as a penalized constraint in the velocity domain at element, edge or node level at the boundary interface. Resulting 2D FE procedures are developed and applied to materially non-linear analysis of plane-strain extrusion The results obtained by the two approaches developed here agree well. There is good correspondence in strain and stress distributions, including the boundary layer, which proves that both methods can be applied to modelling of practical metal-forming processes.
