Serum electrolite concentrations in acute alcohol intoxicated patients

The aim of this study was to analyse possible differences in concentration of the serum potassium, sodium, magnesium, and chlorides in subjects who were acute intoxicated with alcohol opposite to control healthy subjects. Patients intoxicated with alcohol were those, who have been urgent hospitalized because of detoxication on Department of Psychiatry, "Sestre milosrdnice" Universitiy hospital during first six months of 2004. The control group of healthy subjects was made from a sample of healthy volunteers. The concentrations of serum potassium and sodium were identifyed by flame spectrophotometry, and serum chlorides were analysed by potentiomethric method. Magnesium were analysed by mass spectrophotometry. In our results were pointed out that subjects who were acute intoxicated with alcohol have much more higher valueless of chlorides than healthy control group (t=2.754 ; p= 0.007). The valueless of serum potassium (t=2.604 ; p=0.011), and magnesium (t=2.41 ; p=0.018) were statisticaly significantly lower. Finaly we can say that acute intoxication with alcohol brings to changes in concentrations of serum electrolytes. Finding results suggest obligatory monitoring of serum electrolytes in persons acute intoxicated with alcohol, so we can take through treatment in an adequate manner, detoxication, and stabilization of a whole psychophisical state of those patients.
