Alcohol dependence in soldiers with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder comorbid with major depressive disorder
The aim of our study was to establish prevalence of alcohol dependence in soldiers with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and in soldiers with PTSD comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD). The second aim was to explore psychosocial, medical, biochemical, and trauma related variables in Croatian soldiers with combat-related PTSD, or in soldiers with combat-related PTSD comorbid with MDD. Two groups of male combat experienced soldiers with PTSD (N=110), PTSD comorbid with MDD (N=92) were compared for prevalence of alcohol dependence that was diagnosed with set of diagnostic procedures (biochemical tests, CAGE-questionaire, DSM-IV criteria for alcohol dependence). PTSD was diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria and Watson’ s PTSD rating scale. MDD was diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRAS). Our results was shoved that soldiers with combat-related PTSD comorbid with MDD have higher prevalence of alcohol dependence than soldiers with PTSD only. Also, that finding is in relation with higher number of war traumas in soldiers with combat-related PTSD comorbid with MDD. In conclusion, our results were shoved that alcohol dependence as second comorbid condition is often in soldiers with combat-related PTSD comorbid with MDD than in soldiers with combat-related PTSD only. Also, risk factors for development of alcohol dependence in soldiers with PTSD are prior drinking problems, family positive psychiatric history, as well as alcohol related problems.
