Effect of technical grade DDT and p, p'-DDT on adrenocortical function in chicks
The effect of oral administration of te subtoxic doses of tech. grade DDT and p, p'-DDT on adrenocortical function in chicks was investigated. In parallel tests the concentrations of o, p'-DDT, p, p'-DDT, p, p'-DDE and p, p'-DDD were determinated in tissue of adrenals, brain and liver of chicks treated with subtoxic doses of tech. grade DDT. It was found that subtoxic amounts of tech. grade DDT inhibited corticosterone synthesis in chicks, while the same was established in the surviving animals after the application of toxic doses of tech. grade DDT and p, p'-DDT. Reduced corticosterone concentration in the adrenal also affected the activity of gluconeogenesis so that the liver glycogen concentration was reduced at the same time. The degree of adrenal corticosterone reduction was, as a rule, proportional to the dose of insecticide, or to the concentration of metabolites in the adrenal tissue. However, in terms of time, it took place earlier in animals treated with higher doses. The concentration of the determined components and metabolites of tech. grade DDT was significantly higher in tissue of adrenals than in tissue of brain or liver. The deposition of these substances in tissue of adrenal and brain was quantitatively limited.
