Psychopharmacotherapy in the Treatment of Alcohol-Related Disorder
The development of neuroscience, particularly understanding the neurotransmitter system, has lead to ever greater use of psychopharmaceuticals in the treatment of alcoholism in the last twenty years. The particular interest for the existence of alcohol craving as the possible negative influence causing the inability to establish the abstinence and ever greater presence of co-morbidity of alcohol addiction and other mental disturbances opened the possibilities for the application of numerous psychopharmaceuticals during the course of treatment. All the knowledge from the field of psychotherapy and social therapeutic activities on one hand and the efficiency of individual psychopharmaceuticals in establishing and maintaining the abstinence during the course of addiction treatment on the other hand had enhanced the possibilities for quality treatment and rehabilitation of patients addicted to alcohol.
