Daily dietary intake of selenium in eastern Croatia

Data on Se status from neighboring countries and Se content in human milk in Eastern Croatia indicate a possibility of deficient Se status in the area. In order to determine the daily dietary intake of selenium in eastern Croatia, a 7-day duplicate diet study was performed. There were 41 participants (18-49 yrs old ; 14 males and 27 females). Collected samples were frozen at -20 centigrades, homogenized and lyophilized prior to destruction in a microwave digestion system using a HNO3:H2O2 mixture. Se measurement was carried out in a hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometer, using milk powder as reference material. The average daily Se intake in the area is 26.8 microg. A significant difference (p=0.03) exists between male (31.4 microg) and female (24.2 microg) participants. Se intake shows a marginal inverse association with the increasing age of subjects (r=-0.32 ; p=0.04). Relationship between Se intake and intakes of different foods (cereal products, milk and dairy products, meat, fish etc.) was examined too. The inadequate Se intake (lower margin of the RDA is 50 microg/day) is a reflection of low Se levels in the environment, so supplementation of fertilizers with Se should be considered.
