Design and construction of the 29-story hotel

As a part of Dagomis tourist center near Sochi, Russia, a 29-story hotel building was constructed. Although its maximum dimension in plan is approximately 130 m the building has no permanent expansion joints. Finite element idealization of the structure was made using a sort of substructuring technique in order to limit the complexity of the model. The analyses for seismic, wind and temperature effects loadings were made according to Soviet building codes. Provisional expansion joints for the construction period were designed dividing the structure into five parts. When the reinforced structure was completed the measurements of real displacements due to temperature effects were made during three months. On the basis of these measurements it was decided to fill in the joints earlier than originally planned.
